Germany as expected romped past Turkey to qualify for the final of Euro 2008 Soccer tournament in a Semi Final match played on June 25th in Basel, Switzerland.
Philipp Lahm's last-minute winner was a devastating blow to the otherwise hard fighting Turkish team. Indeed, the latter were desperately unlucky losers on the day that they dominated. The two teams scored their goals in interesting bursts. Ugur Boral scrambled Turkey ahead after 22 minutes, but Bastian Schweinsteiger equalised quickly from close range. Miroslav Klose headed Germany in front after 79 minutes, but Semih Senturk levelled before Lahm's late strike after he stole in on Thomas Hitzlsperger's pass to beat Rustu Recber and give the Germans victory after a thriller in which Turkey were the better side.
Germany barely deserved the victory, but once again they have reached a major final despite being unconvincing, where they will face Spain in Vienna on Sunday. Before the match, Turkey were ravaged by injuries and suspension. They defied all expectations to produce an outstanding performance characterized by grit, passion, and desire. However, the Germany efficiency, discipline, focus and organization stood in their way.
Match statistics show that Turkey shot at goal 24 times compared to German's 10. Given the score was 3 - 2 in favor of Germany, Turkey were unfortunately to speculative, ineffective and inaccurate in front of goal. They also had 10 corners to only 2 of their opponents. Their set piece routines failed them.
Germany demonstrated their tactical effectiveness and won even when outplayed. They bring solid pedigree to the finals and Spain had better watch out.
