Huckabee's Theocracy

Mike Huckabee is a crazy theocrat and we are in for a whole heap of trouble if he manages to be elected.

Recently presidential nominee Mike Huckabee said something most disturbing. To quote, "what we need to do is amend the constitution so its in God's standards, rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view of how we treat each other and how we treat the family". A clip of this statement can be found at

Excuse me, but did he really just say that? He wants to change the constitution to be aligned with his Christian God? I'm not surprised so much that he would be in agreement with this idea, but I've never heard even the most Bible thumping politicians suggest this so blatantly and publicly. Ignoring the fact that there is a strong possibility that his God may not even exist, lets look at the religious break down of the United States (as of 2002):

  • Protestant - 52%
  • Catholic - 24%
  • Mormon - 2%
  • Jewish - 1%
  • Muslim - 1%
  • Other - 10%
  • None - 10%

So to taking these numbers into account, at first look it appears that Mike Huckabee wants to amend the constitution to service the beliefs of 78% of the population, leaving the other 22% of the population in the dust. Of course then we must consider that Huckabee is a Southern Baptist. Now the ideas of all of the different Christian denominations are wildly different and completely inconsistent. The Episcopalians, for instance, have gay and lesbian priests, whereas the Southern Baptists think that being gay is a horrible sin. There are different views on just about every issue out there within the Christian community and different views of individual Christians within the same denomination. So really Mike Huckabee is servicing the beliefs of Southern Baptists and their concept of what God is. This narrows down the amount of people that Huckabee wants to change the constitution to service to only about 6% (from a 2001 Gallup poll) of the population, and this percentage is gradually going down.

What we face if Huckabee is elected president is a theocracy geared toward a very small religious minority of the population. It appears that Huckabee would like to impose the morals and beliefs of 6% of the population onto the remaining 94% of the population. Our government so often condemns Iran for its Islamic theocracy, while we are heading in the same direction with Christianity. If this man is elected the world will soon quiver in the face of the new radical Christian theocracy, armed with many weapons of mass destruction. Maybe someday if we are lucky some overseas power will decide the United States is a radical Christian state that is a danger to all that is free in this world and invade us.

To become president, Huckabee would have to take an oath to protect and uphold the constitution. What he has just told us is that he intends to gut it. If he has so little respect for it to refer to it as "some contemporary view of how we treat each other", how is he suppose to uphold the constitution? I guess "Some contemporary view of how we treat each other" is all of that jabber about letting people practice religion as they see fit and allowing people to speak freely. Jeez, who would possibly think that is a good way to treat each other? What horrible ideas. I can tell you with utmost certainty that if Huckabee is elected you can kiss your freedom of religion good bye. The fact that this insane theocrat has not been dismissed as crazy yet astounds me. If any other presidential hopeful without Huckabee's charisma had said this he would have immediately given up his shot at the presidency.

That's the problem now. Too many people think that God doesn't exist. That's the biggest piece of crap I have ever heard. Any you know it. If you really believed that God didn't exist, you would have saimply said that, rather than say that there is a "strong possibility" that he doesn't exist. I'm not Republican, but I agree with Huchabee's statement. Besides, what's so wrong with Christian values? And I'm not talking about the denominational aspects of it. I'm talking about going to the Bible itself. What is so wrong with what the Bible says?

Because most of what the Bible says is clearly false. Some of it is possible, of course, but most of it is obviously and blatantly false.

There is a VERY strong possibility of him not existing. There's also a very strong possibility of him existing. Either way, I don't think we should bring ideals from some book, which I again state has many false ideas, and put them into our government. Whether God exists or not, his so called "words" should not be part of our government.

tl;dr - God should stay out of our government.

Even if we assumed everything you assume about Huckabee and his intentions, you completely overestimate the power of the Presidency. How will the country become a "new radical Christian theocracy" without the consent of Congress. How would the President change the constitution without Congress, or even seek to have it interpreted radically differently without the SCOTUS? And that would mean that at least five justices would have to die and be replaced with these Christian theocrats with the advice and consent of the Senate. This is all silly scaremongering.

And you do realise that for the majority of the Founding Fathers and most politicians throughout the history of the US, there was no question about the value or accuracy of the Bible. What has happened has been the extraction of Christian values, principally in the last half-century. Those who say his "so called 'words'" should not be a part of our government are the ones who are changing things.

I suppose the question could be turned around to ask why the beliefs of 22% of the population should leave 78% in the dust?
