“But wait… in which bill do I put the back-up atomic clock we built in my home state?” Asks Senator Byrd of West Virginia.
The answer, Senator Byrd, is that you will have to title a bill “The Atomic Clock In West Virginia”. But, don't look for voters in the other 49 American states to vote for your bill. You see, it will no longer be just a hidden line item in another spending bill. You have to put your name behind it and justify the spending for it. Did we really need a back-up atomic clock? Perhaps, but should we have allowed other states' law drafters to present reasons for which it should be built in their states? Why not? Should we have allowed the people who paid for it to decide whether to build it and if it was built where it was built? Why not? Seems more fair to me than the “give me this and I'll give you that” type of bargaining that goes on in the legislature today.
Would everyone exercise their right to vote on all legislative bills? No, but a vast majority would vote on the major issues and there would be a lot more self scrutiny by the elected officials we now allow to run amuck with our hard earned dollars and cents. I'm sure there would be far less overspending on government contracts, useless spending on things we do not need, etc. if the law drafters knew their bills would have voter scrutiny, tied directly to their chances of re-election.
So, let's start a movement to take over the running of America, by voting Americans. In the next few days I'll incorporate the movement into my website, or start a blog page. Everyone can participate. After all, isn't that what this is all about, everyone participating in government? Be thinking. There is a way to make this work. We do everything else on the internet; why not run the country on the internet?
Go ahead, do what I did, first think of all the reasons why it will not work. After you spend a few minutes on that concept, start listing the reasons why it will be good for America and how we can make it work. You will fill a page in minutes. However, do not ask your congressperson for help. He or she will run the other way.
Better yet, do ask him or her to help you by showing you his or her list of reasons why it will not work. Compare that to you list of reasons why it must work and ways to make it work. Your list will be much longer and it will make much more sense to you than anything you read from a congressperson.
