Mixing Patriotism with the Olympics is Idiotic

I am the only one that grows tired of people pretending that the Olympic games have anything to do with a nations ideology? What a colossal joke to make such a connection.

In its purest sense patriotism is promoting an ideaology of a nation as more desirable than that of others. Some have taken this too mean my country right or wrong however. It is epecially ridiculous when people tie something as meaningless as the Olympic Games into a competition of nations instead of a nationalistic competition.

The competitors are athletes people not soldiers. Actually I find it an insult to people who risk their life for their own loyalty to their nation to compare an athlete to them. Don't get me wrong I personally am against war but let's not pretend that the 100 meter dash is the same as being in the military.

How ridiculous can it get? In the news recently was a story about Becky Hammon a WNBA basketball star. Becky had long wanted to play at the Olympic games for the USA team. However even though she has had MVP consideration in her league she was not on the top 23 list for the USA women's team.

In the mean time she, like other WNBA stars, signed a lucrative contract to play for a women's team in Russia. As a result they have arranged for her to play at the Olympics for the Russian team. It may result in a $250,000 bonus for her.

So what is the problem? Well many flag waiving frauds object calling this unpatriotic. First of all going for the money is more American than anyone can be. We are the poster child for captitalism!

Secondly America is supposed to be about so called freedoms. Like the freedom to play basketball for whoever you want to. Which by the way her first choice was for the USA.

But besides all of that the notion that women's basketball or any sport reflects even the slightest bit on a nation is absurd. And people who have a problem with whether people participate or not for the USA is hypocritical.

So we ask those who feign patriotism, are you for the freedom you say you are or not? Make up your mind.

..Hi there, interesting article.
Something that I heard recently,
could apply here. Sometimes we
equate country with a government.
What I heard was, support your
country always, support your
government when it is right.
Take care.

Valid point.

It just drives me crazy when we over dramatize trivial matters. I flirted with professional baseball so I am 100% into sports. But it is just entertainment and an industry. It has no legitimate ties to country or government.

I mean why don't we have a battle of the bands too. The music industry is no different than sports.

Seriously this is a marketing ploy. If people did have a manufactured reason to have national pride who would watch or follow the Olympics? Just die hard sports fanatics like me.

And I am interested in performance not what country the people are from. I couldn't care any less where they are from. Would Michael Phelps be any less exciting if he was French or Chinese? Not to me! I would root for him just the same.
