Republican Vs. Democrat, Then Why is Christianity Involved?

Usually U.S. Presidential Election is about Republican candidate versus Democratic candidate. But why did I receive an email saying that I am not a true Christian if I choose Democratic candidate?

Although I live in a far distance from United States of America, U.S. Presidential Election which if I’m not mistaken will be held on 4 November 2008, first Tuesday of November this year, is always interesting thing to scrutinize. There are two interesting candidates this year: Governor Sarah Palin as the first woman from Republican party who is nominated as vice president and U.S Senator from Illinois, Barack Obama, as the first African-American as a presidential nominee from Democrat party. Whoever wins, American will have a leader other than “White Anglo-Saxon Male Protestant” (WASMP). As we know almost all U.S. Presidents are WASMP except John F. Kennedy, who is the only U.S. president, whose religion is Roman Catholic.

We do not label this election as man vs. woman or white vs. black, U.S. citizens named U.S. Presidential Election as Republican, which is also well known as conservative/ right/ red party versus Democrat, which is also known as liberal/ left/ blue party. Here are the characteristics of Republican and Democrat parties: REPUBLIC: Religious folks. Pro-life (anti abortion). They call Democrat as baby killers. Oppose gay marriage. Proud gun owner. Anti immigration especially toward illegal migration. Small government. Believe in private health care. Support death penalty. Military is the first and only option. Oppose increase minimum wage. DEMOCRAT: Not so religious folks. Pro-choice. Support gay marriage. Prefer gun control. Pro-immigration. Big government. Believe in universal health-care. Oppose death penalty. Distribute wealth to all citizens. Military  should be used as the last option. Negotiate is the first thing to do. Support increase minimum wage.

Then one morning I received a mass email told the receivers to not vote for Democratic Party's candidate. I don’t know the sender, and actually I don’t have any right to vote for U.S. President. The email said if I or other receiver vote for Democratic candidate Barack Obama (because I were an African-American for example), I fall into sin and not a true Christian. Because they believe that pregnancy is a God's plan, therefore, human shouldn't interfere with God's plan. Moreover, the letter said, if you applaud gay relationship, although you don't partake of it, you fall into sin. It is not necessary if we are gay, if we agree with gay relationship, we’re sinners and will be punished by God. They refer a passage from Bible. Based on its support to gay relationship and abortion, they said Democratic Party is not a Christian Party.

As a Christian, I am stunned. My Lord Jesus said that His Kingdom is not in this earth, and in my humble opinion, based on Christian teachings, both Republican and Democratic Party are not Christian party. Perhaps it is an obvious thing that Democratic Party is a not a Christian Party. But Republican Party is not a Christian Party either, since the party supports death penalty, put military as the first option and opposes increase minimum wage. War is not “a task from God”. God order us to not kill people. Christianity ordered us to love our enemy and always bring peace. Jesus always opposes military force to attack other. According to the Bible we can only defeat the bad people with kindness. Beside we must think about other people, not only our own's matter.

Christianity has a very high of standard, not only gay matter, having sex before marriage is also sin. I admit many standards are very hard order to be fulfilled; consequently many people label Christians as hypocrites. There is no flawless Christian (that's why Jesus died in the cross to redeem believers). I think both party should not bring religion issue, as they cannot commit 100% of religion order. God is not Republican, although Republican is more conservative than Democrat. Politic and religion must be separated. And no matter which party win, God order us to obey and pray for our government.

However, the election is an interesting thing. Whoever wins, U.S. will mark history with its first African-American President or first woman U.S. Vice President. Happy Voting to U.S. citizens!

Eunice Tan,

Interesting topic that you\'ve written about. Although, there are a couple of things that should be pointed out about biblical teachings>

The bible doesn\'t teach that all killing is sin, but only murder is sin. God teaches that there are times that killing is unavoidable, just like the case of Moses leading the Jews to the Promise Lands and their enemies would attack and kill the Jews at night and this was happening before the Jews had ever fought a war. If the Jews had not fought back against their enemies in a preemptive attack, then their enemies would have slaughtered all of the Jews, before the prophecies had been forfilled. God went out before Moses and his people (the Jews) and gave them the power and strength to defeat their enemies, before their enemies could continue to eliminate them.

The bible teaches that there is a time and place to carryout the death penalty and an offensive that warrants it. Murders are to be put to death. The death of the body isn\'t the same as the death of the soul. If anyone should kill an innocent person out of hate and lie in wait for their victim, then that is murder. If a person kills a person that are trying to kill them, then that is self-defense and not subject to the death penalty. But, it any person shall live by the sword, then they will die by the sword.

All life is precious and life begins at the conception in the woman\'s womb. Abortion is the opposite from preserving this precious life and in the eyes of God is murder. To understand this concept is to understand God\'s point of view and not that of sinful human-beings that we all are. In our minds, we too often try to justify the unjustifiable, because most too often we try to convince ourselves (foolishly) that somehow God\'s perfect justice doesn\'t apply to us. This is the mindset of the unclean souls crying out in shame and denial.

The right of a women to do with her body as she chooses, is indeed her right, but it doesn\'t excuse the choices that are made in the eyes of God. Every choice that we make must be accounted for, good or bad, and God will judge us all according to our choices that we indeed chose.

Humans can try to change the meanings of God\'s Word to suit their positions, but God\'s Word is unchangeable in the eyes of God. Being ultra-religious or a good person or even keeping all of the laws of the Old Testament cannot grant salvation. Only by accepting Jesus Christ into your heart (John 3:16) can deliver you from the laws (Old Testament, 10 Commandments).

Jesus Christ (the Lamb of God or God\'s Sacrifice) paid the price for our sins (past, present and future) and He is the only way to receive forgiveness from sin. The Law or 10 Commandments, were not sent to the world in order to save it. It was given to us, to use as a set of instructions that God desires for our lives, so that we can truly live in the fullness of life.

The Jews once had to make daily and weekly sacrifices to amend their sins before God. These sacrifices ended once Jesus Christ entered into the World, because Jesus Christ represented God\'s sacrifice for the sins that the world had committed before God by not keeping every single one of His Laws. Jesus Christ was to be the last sacrifice that needed to be made, because this sacrifice was perfection in the flesh or God Himself, and only needed to be made one-time.

God\'s sacrifice (Jesus Christ\'s death, burial and resurrection) is the fulfillment of the prophesy that God\'s sacrificial Lamb would be born, to a virgin bride, and He would die, be buried for 3 days and would rise again, thus defeating death (sin). This all happened and now, all anyone is required to do, is accept the Salvation that only Jesus Christ can give and accept Jesus Christ into your heart and confess your sins before Him, so that you\'ll be forgiven (past, present and future). It really is as simple as that. Although, God knows our hearts and we can hide nothing from Him, so He will know if our hearts are in the right place (no lairs will enter the Kingdom of God) at the time we ask Jesus in our hearts.

As far as politics are concerned, we shouldn\'t trouble ourselves with silly little things, because our politics are by in large not God\'s politics. Human politics has been tainted with our sinful ways, but the Kingdom that Jesus Christ will return some day to rule over, will be God\'s perfect politics and justice, and those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ into our hearts will rule and reign with Him in His new and everlasting kingdom yet to come after this Earth age has passed away.

Let no man or woman trouble your heart by calling you names or even doubting your salvation in Jesus Christ. Whatever they say are only words and words alone cannot hurt you. The world can take everything that you love and hold dear including your body that you live in, but if you have truly accepted the Saving Grace (Jesus Christ - Salvation), then rest assure that He will deliver you from your sins and you will be receive the promises that God has promised in the live hereafter.

\"God so loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son so that anyone who believes in him shall not perish but everlasting life.\" John 3:16

Rest assured that God keeps his promises, no matter what mankind believes. That which God has done cannot be undone by man, beast or time. God\'s words and promises are binding and the relationship with him last forever. God (Jesus Christ) is waiting for us to accept his perfect sacrifice, so that we will not be no longer a distant traveler, but a son or daughter wanting to have a relationship with the Father. Jesus Christ bridged the gap that had separated us from the Father after the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, when the first sin had been committed by both Adam and Eve. Because, of what Jesus Christ did for us, we are able to fellowship with the Father (God) and have a relationship with him.

If any man or women should question your faithfulness with the Savior and your heart becomes troubled, then it could be a sign that you are not right with God. If you have doubt about your own salvation, then you should examine your heart, so to be sure that you indeed accepted the Lamb of God with all of your heart, soul and might or just paid him lip-service and really didn\'t know him.

No man or woman knows what is in a person\'s heart except only you and God. God\'s promises will never fail you, but if you are not reading God\'s Word everyday, so that the Word can wash your unclean mind, then Satan will continue to shoot his fiery arrows at you in an attempt to keep you from doing the works that God created you to do in service to his ministries.

If a person cannot feel the attacks of Satan in their daily lives, then one must examine ones relationship with God. Satan will attack those that serve God much more than he will attack his own. Those people who serves the world and not God are still lost in the darkness and Satan needs only to do a little tweaking here and there to keep his own in darkness, but Satan will attack like a furious dragon against God\'s people, so that they will not plant the seed of life (The Gospel of Jesus Christ) into the lives of the lost. Satan cannot take away from God which is God\'s, but he can make our lives quite difficult if we let him.

God Bless,

Nelson Doyle,

Thank you so much for taking time to point out some biblical teachings here.

I learn from you that the Bible doesn't teach that all killing is sin, but only murder is sin. However I still think that God orders us to not kill and killing is sin. I know from Bible that there are times that killing was unavoidable, but all of them were only recorded in the Old Testament. In New Testament, I don't think God suggested any war or revenge. It is impossible for us to fulfill all rules written in the Old Testament. There is the new one, the old pass.

When Peter struck the servant of the high priest who wanted to arrest Jesus and cut off his ear, Jesus said to Peter to put his sword back in its place. Jesus said that He could ask His Father, and He would give Him more than twelve armies of angels. But it had to happen that way (the crucifixion) to bring about what
the Scriptures say.

In New Testament, Jesus emphasis LOVE. We do not have any right to eliminate a nation even though these nation attacks us since the revenge is God's right. Instead Jesus orders us to LOVE our enemy and conquered bad things by doing good things. For example, in my country, some radical Islam bombed our churches, and we prayed for them and never did any revenge. Time passed, and we found some bombers attended church service and apologized.

The Jews who lived at Jesus' time wanted Jesus (as Messiah) to release them from Romans occupation. But contrary to some previous Jewish leaders, Jesus never commanded armies to fight Romans soldiers.

About abortion issue, I agree that abortion should be forbidden. It is not my right , but in my humble opinion it is important that we obey other God's rule such us, - do not commit adultery - to avoid abortion.

I fully agree with you about Jesus Christ as the only way for us to come to Father.

I take your advice to not trouble ourselves with silly little things, like the email I received. Your points make senses. Thank you once again for you precious advices and explanations. May God bless you.

Eunice this is a very interesting story that you have. I think that in some cases killing is legal. How about putting murder's to death? Don't you think they should be or no? I know that some people only want them to serve life in prison, but why should they get to live their normal life span when the victim didn't? I don't consider myself Republican or Democrat, but try to vote for the person. Because of that I tend to vote against people with low moral values.

Excellent piece my friend.

Johnny,

It's very hard for me to answer your question. Government has authority from God, thus they may decide that killing is legal. And Christian as long as they live is this earth is under government's law. Putting murder to death could be legal and right according to law. Republican may argue that the death penalty is a right thing.
However it is not Christian teaching. God wants murders to repent not longing for their death.
About the justice to victim - it is another hard question. I think God asks us to forgive not to revenge.
Thank you for your comment. God bless.

Hi Eunice -

The scripture that you are referring with Jesus instructing Peter to put away his sword was a lesson that Jesus used to teach that \"If you live by the sword than you will die by the sword\" hasn\'t anything to do about putting to death murderers. Jesus was teaching that if we choose to rely on the sword (pick your weapon) to settle battles rather than laying your troubles with God, then you will or could put your mortal body at greater risk of death.

The bible does teach that murderers should be put to death. Whether it is found in the Old Testament or not. The old and the new Testament is all part of God\'s Word and each parts of the bible are needed to interpreted the Word of God. They are used if done properly to confirm or explain scripture throughout the bible.

Give me a few days and I will locate the scriptures that God has set forth for us to follow, so that we can live our lives in safety from our enemies. The Old Testament laws still apply to those people who have not accepted Jesus Christ in their hearts, because it is their disobedience to the Law of God (10 Commandments) that have condemned their souls, if they should refuse to accept the Salvation of Jesus Christ.

We who have accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior have been freed from the death sentence of our sins, because Jesus Christ has paid on the cross for our sins and His blood washes (forgives) us clean from our sins in the eyes of our Heavenly Father. The Law that God gave to Moses in the Old Testament wasn\'t sent to save mankind from sin - Jesus Christ was sent to save us. The Law that everyone single man, woman and child should avoid breaking is the unforgivable sin and that is rejecting the salvation of Jesus Christ. This is the only sin that God said that is unforgivable.

Putting a murderer to death in the body doesn\'t have anything at all to do with putting the soul to death, only God has the authority to carryout such a task. There is a reason that murderers are to be put to death and that is because they took a life. They lived by the sword and now they will die by the sword. It is not about revenge, it is about carrying out justice according to God\'s word.

Your right, God does command us to Love one another and God does Love all of us, but God also warns us about our enemies and the bible teaches us how to deal with them.

You wrote:

\"he Jews who lived at Jesus\' time wanted Jesus (as Messiah) to release them from Romans occupation. But contrary to some previous Jewish leaders, Jesus never commanded armies to fight Romans soldiers.\"

Again, this lesson is being referred to out of context. The reason that Jesus did not send out His armies to free the Jews from Roman occupation is because it wasn\'t yet that time according to the order of Biblical prophesy for the Jews to be freed. There is an order to God\'s ultimate plan. If Jesus had of order His armies to fight and defeat the Romans, then the Jews would have made Him King of Israel right then and there. It wasn\'t Jesus\' time to be the ruling King. He first must die, be buried and risen, before that was to happen. Plus, there were still hundreds of other prophesies to be fulfilled before Jesus\' return (Second-Coming) to rule over the whole Earth.

If you lived in the United States and especially in Tennessee, then you would be more than welcome to attend one of the Bible studies that I, lead with my friends. You could really stand to learn a lot and obtain a clearer understanding of the order of bible prophesy and how the Old and the New Testament are interwoven together. It is truly beautiful in every since of the word.

God Bless,

Eddie, Thanks for you comment.

Nelson,

Thanks again for explaining many aspects of Bible and I hope readers who live in Tennessee who read this are willing to attend one of the Bible studies that you lead. I believe it will help them to live better and even receive the salvation, the greatest gift for mankind.

I do receive further understanding of God's Words through your comment.
I agree the scripture that I am referring with Jesus instructing Peter to put away his sword was a lesson that Jesus used to teach that people who live by the sword will die by the sword. Beside that, I capture another lesson that Jesus forbade us to use sword (in other word to kill or to murder).

About putting to death murderers, my understanding are:
1. God actually don't want the death of sinners including murderer
(Ezekiel 33:1 "I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but the wicked turn from his way and live")
2. God want the murderer to repent
3. God may allow the death penalty for the sake of justice, but actually He doesn't want this. He wants repent of the murderer rather than his death.
4. Your comment does open my understanding of Word of God or God's law, that according to the Bible, death penalty (by authority)is allowed, since the government get authority from God to do the execution. Thank you. However Catholic church opposes death penalty, and previously before writing this article I believe that death penalty doesn't reflect Christian value. I still have an understanding that death penalty is not Christian value as Catholic is Christian, although not all Christians are Catholic. OK, I agree with your Bible understanding, and you have done a good study thorough it, but we must accept that there are many kinds of Christian nowadays, and Christian not always has same view toward something. Bible should be in the top position - yes, I agree this.
5. The conclusion is - now I know that death penalty does not violate God's law, although it is not God's main intention for the murderer.

I accept your point that the old and the new testament is all part of God's Word. In my previous comment I was trying to say about newborn Christian, some laws from Old Testament are not valid anymore. For example newborn Christian doesn't need to offer cattle to cover up his sin.

About Jews wanted Jesus to free them from Roman occupation, actually yesterday I was trying to talk about war and the example that Jesus refused to use military force to fight other. God allowed Moses, Joshua, David, etc. to fight their enemies, but in Jesus' time, He didn't fight for His nation. You have explained the reason why, it's not His time. With this story I was trying to tell that God doesn't suggest war and revenge in this modern era. War kills people. Is it task from God.?

Looking forward to your sharing of wonderful Words of God. Many thanks before. Unfortunately I will have one week holiday starting tomorrow, and will away from internet, so till next week.
God bless you.

Hi Eunice -

You wrote:

\"About putting to death murderers, my understanding are:
1. God actually don\'t want the death of sinners including murderer
(Ezekiel 33:1 \"I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but the wicked turn from his way and live\")
2. God want the murderer to repent\"

To understand both of these scriptures, you must understand that God teaches us about two different types of death. There is the death of the body and there is the death of the soul. When God teaches that he doesn\'t want the death of the sinners, he is teaching that He doesn\'t wish for the soul to die. When wants sinners to repent, so that they will live (Jesus is life and when a sinner accepts Jesus, then they are accepting life over death (sin).

We all are going to death a physical death, because sin brought death into the world. After we die, we will be given a new body that is both incorruptible and indestructible. We are all going to die a physical death unless God raptures us before that.

The scriptures need to be studied and prayed on before and after reading it. If not careful, the scriptures can be misquoted or taught out of context and can be quite confusing for newly reborn Christians and those people who are on the fence still.

There is only one type of Christianity and that is those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior, who came to the earth and die for our sins, was buried and was resurrected (has \"Risen - who lives\"). People can teach different versions of Christianity all they want to, but the fact is, is that God has made it perfectly clear how to obtain His forgiveness and salvation and that is by accepting Jesus Christ. The God (the \"Bible\") does not teach any other way and no man has been given the authority to change God\'s Word or promises. God will surely deal with anyone who teaches a false study of His Word.

I am going to be writing a detailed article about salvation and Christianity that will hopefully help guide anyone who is really trying to understand exactly what salvation is (according to God\'s Word). It will explain that Christianity isn\'t defined has to which church affiliation (Catholic, Baptist, Church of Christ, etc..) that you belong to and fellowship with, but it has to do with having a personal relationship with God (Jesus Christ bridge the gap between mankind and God, so that we can have a personal relationship with the Father in Heaven).

So so-called Christian churches teach that there are many ways to get to heaven, but the truth is, is that is not what God teaches us. Anyone who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior are going to end up spending an eternity in Hell and that is what God (the \"Bible\") teaches.

To Love your enemy and to Love your neighbor, is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ (the \"Word of God\") with them. Teach them about Hell too, because that is where sinners who did not repent for their sins and accept Jesus Christ as their savior is going to be spending their eternity for rejecting Jesus Christ. Rejecting the salvation that Jesus Christ wants to give to anyone who will accept it (accept Him), is the one unforgivable sin that the Bible teaches us about. It is the only sin that cannot and will not be forgiven. All other sins can and are forgiving, once a person accepts Jesus Christ in to their heart.

I have so much to share on this subject and I will start writing the articles about it starting this week.

God Bless and May God Keep You Safe,

Nelson Doyle

Hi Nelson,

I don't know if you read this since it has been a long time from your last reply.
I agree we have to examine the Word of God carefully and use the Word itself to become the light to guide us. And the Holy Spirit will teach us to understand God's intention.
I am looking forward to read your detailed article about salvation and Christianity. There are so many things of Bible we have to learn well and it's good if you are willingly to share what you've gotten from God with us. Thanks so much

God bless you too,

I see around my town stickers that say, \"God is not a Republican or a Democrat\". I can agree with the comment however, I see that as Christians we need to vote for the issues, such as gay marriage, and for the leaders that best support Christian values. The Republican party may not be the best party but, they sure seem to lean more towards those values. The economy could be floorishing or we could have another depression,so what! What is more important to a man? Man\'s ways or Gods?

Eunice, unfortunately, quite a few people feel that Republican=Christian. Thankfully, the Lord is above that type of thinking. It is important for our faith to inform our vote, to break down the issues from a biblical perspective, and to judge our candidates according to character and truth. My preference is for us to be open-minded with our party of choice while we discern with our hearts and minds that God gave us to make a good decision with our vote.
