Ronald McDonald and... Joe Camel?

A commentary on why I find the analogy uncalled for.

I read not too long ago that Ronald McDonald is now compared to Joe Camel. Since I believe the Analogy is somewhat harsh I have decided to write a commentary on it. There has been a lot of controversy over fast food, granted, but at the same time cigarettes are far more detrimental.

To liken Ronald McDonald to Joe Camel is equal to likening Jack the Ripper to Frosty the Snowman. I also read not too long ago about a woman who sued McDonald's for making her obese. Both the analogy and lawsuit I find absurd. I mean come on people, Ronald did not force that big mac into your hands or down your throat.

American society as a whole has a tendency to "pass the buck" as far as responsibility for their health goes. To me the main issue here is self control. Instead of blaming the fast food industry for the obesity crisis, lay off the big mac and fries. This may seem a little harsh, but consider it tough love my friends.

Instead of likening Ronald McDonald to Joe Camel I suggest we first look in the mirror. Ultimately, we are responsible for our own health. If you feel you have a problem with over eating, go talk to a counselor or dietitian. Take responsibility for your health, get help when you first notice a problem. Don't wait until the problem escalates and you are so out of shape you can't get up in the morning.

Disclaimer: Don't be offended by this article, it was only intended to encourage people to stop the blame game and instead start and maintain healthy lifestyle and dietary practices.

Nelson, I am trying to remember where and when this mentality started? Stores and bar tenders are to observe patrons and not sell alcoholic beverages to anyone inebriated. A patron sues MacDonalds because hot coffee, she placed between her legs spills and burns her. Drunk drivers kill someone and store workers and bartenders get sued. It makes you want to holler "Grow Up!"

Very good article with valid points that should not have to be said. Thank you.

Nelson, I forgot to mention that Ronald McDonald or MacDonald (I can't remember the spelling) has done a lot of things for our communities. They house and feed family members near the hospital, while their loved ones are hospitalized, just to name one (and there is no cost to the family).

Jupiter, Please forgive me for calling you Nelson. Your article was listed right under Nelson's in Community and I meant to read his and then yours, but clicked the other, so my mind was stuck on his name. I apologize. My comments were about your work, however, and your article is still just as valid. Thank you.

Hey, how about I read his now, and call him Jupiter? lol

Jupter, You are so right. Nobody forced the cigerette or the food in our mouth. We have to take responsibility for ourselves. I also think the fast food places should serve healthy food instead of the calorie and fat laden food that they do. Of course I don't have to eat it and I don't. Good article.
