Skinny Models Banned in Madrid Fashion Show: Is It Fair?

Counter commentary on a news report I came across this morning.

In the news this morning I read about a modeling pageant where skinny models were banned. Yes, that's right, skinny models were banned at a fashion show in Madrid. It is not surprising given the number of eating disorders on the rise among the world's youth.

Here's the Question

Is it fair to naturally skinny models and the agencies they work for? Maybe not, but at the same time I believe it is a good step, however drastic, in the right direction. This article is a counter commentary on the subject. I believe modeling agencies need to reinforce that beauty is more than skin deep and rail thin.

I know you may say "Well they're models, they get paid to look good." While this is true to some extent I think being healthy is key to any modeling career that's going to have longevity.

To my readers with modeling dreams I will say this, Do not bend to society's view of beauty, beauty comes in many forms. Don't let one agency or group of people force you to fit into their stereotyped preconcieved idea.

If an agency or photographer can't accept you for the way you were made, go somewhere else. There is no reason to sacrifice your health for the sake of fame.

Anorexia is a modern day problem! I believe it is a bit of an over reaction but in saying that, each girl that is saved because of it, is worth it.

I watched a documentary once on the topic of models using crack to keep their weight down and energy up. Beauty is not worth that type of drastic measure. The media has created very false concepts of beauty in the eyes of the public. Thank you for your article regarding this important message.

Yes, I do think the painfully thin models should be banned. They are a bad example for healthy girls. Maybe the agencys are waking up. take care, Ruby
