The Effect of Commercials on Our Society

This explains the affect of commercials on young children, and how our society is based on appearance.

The other day I was watching television, when a commercial caught my eye. But it was not because the advertisement featured something useful or insightful to man kind. It was not because I would like to purchase the item, nor was it because I thought it would make a great gift.

The commercial was for the "My Scene" dolls. Usually these commercials do not bother me, as I do not take much notice to them. But this one I couldn't ignore. This advertisement was letting its viewers know that these girl dolls were all about hair, nails, and fashion. That it is. They didn't need to be smart dolls, or have jobs, because they are pretty. You may think "big deal" or "who cares". But what you don't know is that this is a big deal, and you should care! Commercials and dolls like these are what causes young girls (and by young I mean as young as 8!) to be self conscious, question their appearance, and go on diets or develop disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.

I don't understand why anybody would want young children to get the idea in their heads that they should judge others on appearance. This is why our society is based on everything but personality. There are very few people who do not judge people based on how they look, and not many realize that there are bigger problems outside of themselves and appearance. What about the kids starving in Africa, the millions of people who don't have the kind of money to look anything like those dolls, or the global warming of our earth? Nobody notices that this stuff is happening because they are too involved with their hair, makeup, diet, and nails. There just comes a point when you have to ask yourself “Is the way I look going to help me change the world?” or “Am I helping anybody, or even myself?” or even “Is this shirt going to get me a good college education?”. What people don't realize is that the way they look doesn't make a difference in the world.

I really don't know what the My Scene people were thinking when they made this commercial, nor do I really want to know. But I think they should know what they are doing to our society, and to our children. The only time these people will really care is when it's their children starving themselves, or shoving their fingers down their throats. Until then, we will just have to watch each other, as a society, crash.
