Indians and Americans: Can You Digest This?

The recent visit of the Indian Prime Minister to America where his emotional and very personal expressions for Mr. Bush raised every common man’s eyebrows.

The plans about Indian Prime Minister's visit to America have been in news for a few days. And finally the news of the visit flooded the newspapers with astonishing headlines” no deal yet, but India loves you Mr. President” and “Indians love you Mr. President”. American feelings for Mr. Bush are not hidden from anyone after all the surveys and the polls and the ratings which were given to him.

Some of the expressions exchanged between them left eyes widely opened when Mr. Manmohan Singh said” So Mr. President, this may be my last visit to you during your presidency, and let me say that thank you very much. The people of India deeply love you. And all that you have done to bring our two countries closer to each other is something history will remember.” Not only this, he also added “And when the history is written, I think it will be recorded that president George bush played a historic role in bringing our two democracies closer to each other.” Hardened journalists looked at each other quizzically never having heard such words in bilateral exchanges. And for the common people as well, is there anything hidden?

The prime minister may have personally felt his generosity and affection but why there is inclusion of the whole nation when he says “In the last four and a half years that I have been the Prime Minister, I have been the recipient of your generosity, your affection, friendship. It means a lot to me and the people of India”. We select our Presidents and Prime Ministers so each and every word spoken by them at the national and international level should be in agreement with the whole nation and should hurt the sentiments of the general public.

Very interesting article, neelam. Bush has been getting a lot of heat in America for the way he is running this country so it surprises me that someone would be impressed by what he has done.

Very interesting article. I'm sure President Bush was surprised and humbled at the compliments. If the Prime Minister truly felt this way, then President Bush actually accomplished something positive in his Presidency. :)
