Is Hillary Finished?

An analysis of the "horse race" of the race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination for President. Does Obama have the race wrapped up? Why is Hillary still in the race if the odds against her winning are so long?

We had another inconclusive split with the Democratic Presidential race, but that is advantage Obama. He gets his win at 730pm, as soon as the polls close in North Carolina, to interrupt the beginning of my Jeopardy, while Hillary's win actually did not come until the next day at 1 in the morning and by a razor thin margin while my TV was still on, but I was long since “sacked out.”

I was trying to find the right sports analogy for it, but I think this is the best one. This is a basketball game where one team is up by about 12 points with a minute left and the two teams have “traded baskets”. Obama is still by 12. This is not a big lead with 10 minutes to go in the game, but it is a huge, almost insurmountable lead with less than a minute to go. We are running out of primaries and Hillary is running out of time and delegates to catch up with the bizarre delegate allocation of the Democratic party. Obama has apparently survived the Pastor Wright and the Bittergate, enough to win the nomination.

I can only think of the three reasons as to why Hillary is still in the race at this point after Tuesday.

  1. She is delusional and thinks she can still win, even though the evidence is not there that she can.
  2. She knows something we don't- there is another Obama scandal that would completely ruin his candidacy (It would have to be special, given what we have learned about him over the last few weeks)
  3. She is trying to sabotage him so he will lose so she can take on McCain in 2012.
  4. Maybe a fourth, that she will take the VP spot on the ticket, but I don't think so.

Conventional wisdom is changing rapidly in this campaign. But that is where it stand now. As a political junkie and Republican, I have enjoyed the two of them fighting each other like this for the last four months. But I think I have had enough as have most people. So what if Hillary wins West Virginia and 15 of its 28 delegates? The math does not allow her to catch up. So there we have it. Hillary is done (barring something shocking about Obama that we don't know about it.)
