Is Sarah Palin a Modern Day Esther?

A commentary addressing the assertion that Sarah Palin is a present day Esther.

I recently received a rather lengthy email forwarded from a pastor in Ohio, who chronicles his experience delivering a message to Sarah Palin he believes he received from God. It appears this email is receiving the sort of viral forwarding that many emotional stories do capped off with an urging to forward to as many people as possible to ensure the word gets out. The email itself recounts all of the details surrounding both the receiving of the message and the miraculous events that took place to put him in the path of Governor Palin, her husband and John McCain. His message to her: you are a modern day Esther.

I didn't understand what this meant but the email referred to her as "anointed" and repeated a few times that she was "chosen to reign". It included encouragement to "stay strong" and not to "fear man" for she would encounter hateful criticism in the weeks to come but would prevail in this "God-calling". I searched the pastor's web site looking for a clearer idea of what it meant to be a present day Esther and decided the best thing to do was to read the book of Esther myself to gain some insight.

After reading the entire book, I have decided that he is absolutely right! You see, Esther saved her people (the Jews) from slaughter at the hands of the king's Prime Minister Haman. Not with forcefulness or intelligence. She was in no way extraordinary or exceptional but for one thing: she was beautiful. It was the king's love for her, along with a few coincidences, that led to her people being spared.

Let's look at the story and the parallels to today's political environment: The king (John McCain) had fallen for her (Sarah Palin) because she was more beautiful (appealing to women voters) than any of the other virgins he had been offered (Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Condoleezza Rice, etc.). He made her queen (Vice Presidential candidate), and it was due to his feelings for her that she was allowed to approach him (join the ticket), even though he had not requested her presence (ever expressed any interest in her political career). When she did approach him (join the ticket), she wasn't completely up front about everything (abuse of power as Governor) and had never told anyone she was a Jew. She invited him to a feast prepared by her (changes in Wasilla) and when he asked what she wanted, she expressed that she wanted him to spare her and her people (Republicans) from slaughter (no explanation needed here), and he did. She was quite brave to do this for at the time approaching the king without an invitation was punishable by death and the story does point to virtues of patience and humility that made her likable. At the time though, she had no choice; the alternative to not approaching him was also death.

Sarah Palin is no different. Her party needed to attract women voters and appeal to the ultra conservative so she had no choice but to run whether she was ready or not, and it requires the religious conservatives rally support for her as Esther did and ask them to pray. This rallying of the people is the true intent of this email and an attempt to fulfill the prophecy. It stirs up emotion and a belief that this woman is somehow going to save the nation in spite of the fact that she has little national political experience and is naïve about international diplomacy. Blind faith can be dangerous and Sarah Palin is in no way prepared to be first or second in command of our nation and a few months on the campaign trail are not going to change that.

An interesting comparison. I also received that email and I'm always skeptical about such movements. But then I know that if God wants her and Sen. McCain in office, he will do it. So come Nov. 4 we'll have a better idea of whether that email story is genuine. If the Reps win, I would not attribute it to the viral email, however. In fact, Sen. Obama has such a large lead it would genuinely take a miracle from heaven for Sen. McCain to win. As for Esther, she had grace under fire, courage, boldness, and other virtues as you pointed out. Only time will tell if Gov. Palin compares favorably to Esther, one of the greatest female leaders in history.

To the author, you got to be kidding to compare Sarah Palin to Esther. Give me a break. Why do Republicans always look for religious assistance or advice to realize when they're lost? This lady is no Esther. She was more like a smoke screen. Call it what is is, John McCain gambled away the Republican bid for president. Actually to take the point a little further, he actually wanted to highlight her personal life. That's the main reason she was selected. But let's wait and see on Nov. 4,2008.

Oh, and by the way, The person to be slaughtered on the gallows that Haman had built was Mordecai. It was not the Jews. The people had to bow but Mordecau refused and it angered Haman. Read the bible and get that fact straight. Well, anyway God bless!

Very creative, but I think that comparing Palin to Esther is a bit of a stretch.

"Blind faith can be dangerous." That statement alone is a dangerous one. As a Christian we are supposed to walk in faith. In fact, if you will read Hebrews 11 you will see how important faith is. By faith....By faith....By faith....

It is important to have faith in Jesus and faith in God. I am very concerned for those who have such little faith.

racist, deceitful little jewish virgin! No matter the cruel, sensual king HAD to possess her in his court as opposed to free and living among her own people. Or that he didn't care a whit about the plight of her people! Shame on her for employing charm, courage, and shrewd manipulation of the rich and powerful king in order to save her people. IWANT A LEADER LIKE THAT!

btw - Esther's influence with her captor, the King, made life for her own tribe much improved and Mordecai became an advisor to the King. Go figure!

To you poor souls on the left who know so little of the Bible; it doesn\'t surprise me that you\'d have to read the whole book of Esther to find out the story. Well, Time will tell if Sarah Palin is an Esther like figure of our times, but let\'s get this straight for the pseudo-intellectual leftists like Susan Sarandon who love saying, \"Jesus was a community organizer and Pilate was a governor,\" Wrong!!! Jesus was known as a \"Rabbi or Teacher\" by his friends,& he didn\'t stir up and agitate crowds against the government like the protege\'s of Saul Alinsky do. Barack Obama would be one of those disciples of Alinsky. You know who were the community organizers surrounding the Passion story. The traitor, Judas Iscariot, organized a mob to come and arrest Jesus, and the High Priest Caiaphas organized a mob to shout, \"Crucify Him, Crucify Him, Crucify Him\" when Pontius Pilate asked what he should do with this man who calls himself, \"King of the Jews.\" A couple of similarities, Obama doesn\'t care much for America, a Nation that was founded on Biblical principles and the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and Judas was a traitor who betrayed the true Messiah. I know who the Messiah is, and Barack Obama, \"you\'re no Messiah.\"
