The Current Spurt for More Federal Regulations

Are we about to endow the federal government with further control inside our personal life?

Are we about to endow the federal government with further control inside our personal life? This is the way it appears as our elected Politician's demand that our government impart supplementary protection for the already hurting homeowners. With the increase of potential mortgage tribulations plus America's weakening dollar it appears that the American homeowner is encouraging such evil intervention with open arms.

This acceptance by the government for increased federal regulations was apparent with the recent crackdown for the airline companies when the feds grounded thousands of flights to perform a safety inspection. This clearly indicated an increased vigilance in the government's enforcement of its existing regulations and laws. One might even say it's a power grab of some sorts by the feds. Many people are in favor of these tougher government controlled guidelines in addressing issues relating to climate changes. Corporate salary control, oil industry profits as well as the high food costs.

Many of these advocates see this increase in governmental control as a benefit to the ordinary Americans who may be struggling in these currently hard economic situations. Don't get me wrong as I feel for these people however they did this to themselves. They knew what the risks were when they accepted variable mortgages. They knew beforehand that this could happen, therefore why should my tax money be used to pay for their homes. In addition, as with any intervention of our government there is a large chance that there will be too much regulation.

We as citizens must be concerned over any regulation extended by our federal government. George Bush just a month ago while urging Congress not to become overzealous to the current housing crisis quickly extended the FHA's power in controlling the profit of mortgage lenders. This has come as no surprise considering bush's quick ability to control more and more of the American's life.

The worse part of all of this legislation aimed at regulating areas of our life where the government has no control being is that these calls for more added regulations are originating from an anger response of the ordinary Americans as they see the equity in their homes rapidly decline and yet the federal government will help the big investment firms such Bear Stearns.

As with any other problem which congress and our politicians face they will not merely solve it but rather they will turn in into departments, programs and additional regulatory policies. Additional funds will be expended to complete studies and hire administrators at ridiculous salaries. Several samples of this bureaucracy are:

  • The 1970's energy crisis resulted in our Department of Energy being established
  • The 9-11 terror attacks resulted in the birth of Homeland Security department
  • The Great Depression ushered in many federal social programs
  • In response to the bank runs of the early 1990's the Federal Reserve was created
  • The U.S. Armed Forces as well as our intelligence community were reorganized under the National Security Act of 1947 to place central control over the military branches.
  • President Johnson in 1963 felt that with the establishment of the Housing and urban affairs department poverty and the growing inner city rate of crime would decrease

The list could go on endlessly. The point to be made is that we are allowing this to happen. Nothing is given to the American people without stipulations attached to it. Our government is not going to provide any sort of goods or services unless they have ultimate control over it. We as Americans have got to wise up before it is too late and stop demanding more from the government and more from ourselves.
