The Impact of Race on the Presidential Race

Discussing the impact of the race during the democratic primaries and the possible future impact during the presentational election.

In the coming election we witness an epic battle between John McCain and Barack Obama. One must realize the obvious differences in these candidates when it comes to age, background and most distinctly race. In what was made a major issue during the Clinton's campaign against Obama, one could deduce from their campaign that their slants at Obama's race and background may have cost themselves the race. Some comments that were made toward Obama were that he received more black support simply because of his race. Some other comments were that Barack Obama would find it hard to overcome his racial barrier to win predominantly white states.

During the democratic primary, Hillary's lead was well extended over Barack Obama and the other democratic candidates early in the race. But what seemed to have slowed down the Clinton's momentum was a hurtful comment Bill Clinton made at Barack Obama. It was a blatant insinuation that he may have gained voters because of their race. The black community did not accept this statement well and in turn Barack Obama went in a bit of a streak of his own throughout the primaries.

Some moments that stood out greatly were statements that members from his old church made in regards to the democratic primaries. One of his pastors had attacked Caucasians themselves and simply said, “God damn America”. After a few hours of media coverage, it didn't take long for Barack Obama to release his thoughts in a press conference. He firmly denied being in support of any of these statements. Another pastor at Obama's church had decided to outwardly mock Hillary Clinton and claim that she felt “entitled” to the presidency because of her white skin color. After this event did Obama feel forced to separate himself from his church of old. However, one can't help but think of what the presidential race has to offer us and how the outcome will be affected because of racial prejudice.
