The Maverick McCain versus The Candidate McCain If you are going to have a political event at a stadium which seats 10,000 people, where you are trying to give the tickets away with few takers, against one being held at a stadium which holds 75,000 and people are waiting for possible standing room only entry, which event would you think has the bigger problem? That is the report on the political scene between Senator John McCain, star of the first event, and Senator Barack Obama, headliner of the second event. They may not have enough people for the first event and the second event may not have enough seats to contain all the people who want to attend.
But John McCain mocks Senator Obama's drawing power, as some sort of horrible thing that means that Senator Obama cannot lead. Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? Just as when Mr. McCain uses his prisoner-of-war status, which was honorable on its face, to explain why he owns seven or more homes. Makes perfect sense to me. But I digress. My thought, John McCain wishes he could garner a crowd of 25,000, and appears to be just a bit of jealousy of the other side. The old maverick McCain, who was a happy warrior, who appeared to love, to buck his party some of the time, and go with the side that made sense. As in not wanting to vote to give tax cuts to the wealthy, because it was not in the interest of the most people, in need of tax cuts. Or when drilling off-shore for oil, was thought by him to be a sort of bait and switch, because drilling for oil would not yield a drop of oil for seven to ten years in the future, and might destroy the coastlines.
But now, which may be fair, but everything is being done, ala Karl Rove style politics, more fear, more smear, more distain, more out right untruths. He insists on questioning Senator Obama's commitment to the protection of the United States, saying he would rather win the election rather than win the Iraq war. Which is very close to accusing the Senator of treason, which I am sure Senator McCain knows is not true, but he doesn't care, whatever sticks, he'll take it. What it really looks like to some, is that Mr. McCain will say any thing to try to win an election. It is sad, when he was asked by a reporter, how many homes he and his wife had, he told him, he would have his staff get back to him. Seems he couldn't remember he owned somewhere around seven, it really has not been nailed down as yet. When he was on Jay Leno the other night, he explained it, by saying for five years, he didn't have a home, a table or a chair, he was a prisoner-of-war. It seems this is always his default position, don't accuse him of anything, he was a p. o. w., it is being used so much, it is becoming cheapened, with overuse. How about good policy changes Senator McCain, such as an equitable tax cut for the middle class?
How about shoring up Social Security, instead of trying to privatize it? What about giving veterans good health care instead of proposing to ration it? How about a good GI bill, instead of cutting it, to make sure the military people, don't decide not to remain in the service, what kind of thinking is that? How about no more tax cuts to big oil companies who are making huge, forty billion dollar, profits a quarter already? Come back, Senator McCain to the sensible thinking person you appeared to be in the past. You were easier to take, and much more likeable. The Republican Convention begins on Monday, and it seems that Senator McCain will announce his choice tomorrow for his Vice- President. Maybe Mitt Romney, Joe Lieberman, or Tim Pawlenty will be chosen. Late word is that Tim Pawlenty has been chosen, we will see. We do understand that, when Obama chose Senator Biden, Senator McCain was said to be rethinking his choice. The national polls are very close, one point difference in Obama's favor, but the state polls, will be where the real fight takes place.
