Willingness to Reach Across the Aisle

A look at Barack Obama's so called flip flop on the oil issue.

Sen, Obama is taking flack for his pivot on the offshore oil drilling issue. I think this is unfair. The Republicans are saying that Sen. Obama is flip flopping, not only because he has pivoted on the offshore drilling issue, but because he voted to give the oil companies a tax break in the energy bill in 2005. What he has shown me is a willingness to reach across the aisle to solve Americas energy problem. In order to get a an energy bill passed he was willing to give the oil companies a tax break. Now he is willing to give the oil companies some of the 88 million acres they want opend up in order to get a comprehensive energy plan passed that actually invests in alternative sources of energy. The oil companies in return will have to give up the tax breaks they got in 2005. Sen. McCain on the other hand is unwilling to give an inch an the tax breaks to the oil companies. What happened to the Maverick that was willing to buck his own party to do what was in the American people's best interest?

The answer to that is simple. Since Sen. McCain started running for President he has become a puppet for the Republican party. He was against the Bush tax cuts, now he's for them. He was against offshore drilling, now he's for it. Both are Republican stances. When he does try to cut the strings, the Republican party ties the string back on. When he said recently to George Stephanopolous that everything was on the table, even tax increases, he and his pundits had to take it back and say they that taxes will only be used as a negotiating tactic, but they really are not on the table. Which is it? What do you really stand for Sen. McCain?

The Republicans say not to trust Sen. Obama because you don't really know what he stands for. I Think he knows what he stands for, actually solving Americas problems, by being willing to work with the other side. By showing his willingness to work with the other side he has proven to me that he is willing to lose an election by reaching across the aisle to solve Americas problems, than win one by saying "my way or no way". "My way or no way" is why congress is always in gridlock. "My way or no way" is how President Bush's administration has tarnished the office of the President of the United States. I believe that if we elect Sen. Obama President, he will do all he can to make “my way or no way", go away.
