The Sichuan earthquake and US politics.

As of May 21, 2008, there were 41353 confirmed fatalities (with 40854 in Sichuan province) and 274683 injured in the quake zone, which has been upgraded to magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale. Chinese government officials warn that the death toll could easily exceed 50000.

Ma Ying-Jeou Inauguration

Ma Ying-jeou, the Hong Kong born son of a Chinese mainlander was sworn in as the 12th president of Taiwan, the Republic of China on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, according to a report by The China Post. In his inauguration speech, Ma said “I do solemnly and sincerely swear before the people of the whole country that I will observe the Constitution, faithfully perform my duties, promote the welfare of the people, safeguard the security of the state and in no way betray the people's trust. Should I break my oath, I shall be willing to submit myself to severe punishment by the state. That is my solemn oath”.

Comments/Implications/Analysis/Comments/Remarks:

Ma triumphantly prevails after being acquitted in a serious corruption case. He also reiterated that presidents need to be accountable for their actions. In addition, according to a report in the South China Morning Post, Ma promised closer ties with the mainland. How much closer Taiwan and the mainland become during Ma's presidency will determine his legacy.
