The Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Danny Williams himself a Conservative, is campaigning against the federal Conservative party. He has start the ABC (Anything But Conservative) campaign. Prime Minister Harper broke a promise given to the Newfoundland Premier in writing regarding the province's offshore oil deal which has cost the province Billions of dollars.
Another oddity with this election is that many people in almost every riding in Canada are calling for Strategic voting to defeat Conservative candidates and prevent them from forming a majority government. The Harper government has a very poor record on climate control, and that has many people worried. In Canada we have 5 political parties although only 3 have a chance of forming the government. The idea with strategic voting is to ask those who usually vote for a party whose candidate doesn't have much chance of wining in that particular riding, to vote instead for the candidate who has the best chance of defeating the Conservative whether it be liberal or NDP, and in the case of Quebec , The Bloc.
The new Liberal leader Stephane Dion, has not lived up to expectation, and even many Liberal Candidates are privately saying that many people can't relate to him. This may translate into extra seats for the NDP, whose leader is the most likeable of all party leaders. Mr. Layton too, has shown that his party can govern and be fiscally responsible.
Most Canadians who don't like the Conservatives, think that the best they can hope for this time is a minority government led by either Mr. Harper, Mr Layton or Mr Dion. Minority governments have usually worked well in Canada.
All of this makes for an interesting election day on October 14 th .
