The Lights Are On But Nobody's Home.

Some people can be so stupid, and they don't even know it. We do the dumbest things at the worst possible moment, like when the whole world is watching.

People do really stupid things these days. I know that stupidity is nothing new, but sometimes it seems as though the world as a whole has dumbed down considerably in recent decades. I have heard of burglars who attempt to break into people’s homes, or into banks, or stores only to find themselves trapped inside, unable to get out. Sometimes they call the police themselves just to get free.

Talk about stupid. Recently a man got locked out of his own house. Did he break a window to get in? No. What did he do? He somehow climbed all the way up on the roof of his house, and attempted to climb down the inside of the chimney. He was rescued by the fire department later that same day. I think it would have been less expensive, and less embarrassing just to smash a window and replace it later.

Dumb blond jokes prevail in this society, but how often do we really see the inspiration for these jokes? You don’t, because the people making them up are anything but dumb. It’s usually the people who think of themselves as the smartest people on the planet, who get caught doing the dumbest things.

I think the main reason for this is because these days, with technology the way it is, there simply isn’t much that can happen these days, especially in high-population areas, that goes unnoticed. Perhaps human beings have always been stupid, only now it shows more.

Like those characters who try to out-run the cops because they have unpaid parking tickets in their glove compartment, or the lunatics who drive up on the sidewalk, and right into the fronts of houses and stores, because they are trying to flee from a pursuing squad car. Hey, it works in the movies, right? Well, in real life, those cops have more tricks up their sleeves than you do.

I like the story about the Mountaineer who climbed a mountain nobody had ever climbed before or since, and this is what happened to him: He fell over the side of the mountain, and jammed the lower half of his leg up into his thigh, smashing the knee joint in pieces. Then his partner, tried to lower him down the mountain on a rope, but could only take him so far, and finally had to cut him loose. The guy free falls into a crevasse in the ice and survives. He crawls out of that crevasse and down the mountain on his own, finally catching up to his two able-bodied partners. When the whole ordeal is over, he was asked if he had developed a faith in God during his ordeal.

His answer? No. Never gave God a thought. Must be I don’t believe in God. Wow, talk about stupid. Here he was, being given second chance after second chance, being kept alive all the way, and he doesn’t believe there’s a God. Like I said, the lights are on, but nobody’s home.
