The Controlled Prices Go Higher Than the Free Prices

The Government of Argentina had used for the last 2 years the same prices agreements to control the inflation.

In March, the latest official report showed the ineffectiveness of these agreements; the prices from those who were not subject to the agreements between the companies and the Government increased less than the prices from those who were subject to these agreements and had their prices controlled by them.

The increase of the 1.1% March inflation consists of a 1% rises from the "free" items (which weight is 50.78% in the Controlled Price Index (CPI)). According to Economics & Regions, there was a greater price rise (1.3%) included in agreements, such as food and drinks, clothing, tourism and school supplies.

Some of the stand out products on the agreed prices, reveal the following increases: meat (3.4%), bakery products (1.7%), underwear (2.7%), texts books and materials for education (1.9%).

From March 2007 to March 2008, the development is the same: the inflation accumulates an 8.8%, explained by a rise of the 6.8% in the Free Prices Index (IPL) and 11.1 % in the CPI.

The latest price agreement was the "Suggested Prices", between the government and the freezers, and the butchers and supermarkets, which were based on the popular cuts of beef. Due to the agricultural conflict this agreement could not put into practice.

The gap between the "free" inflation and the one that measures the CPI began to shrink, due to the ineffectiveness of the agreements policy that had been reduced since December 2007.
