More information has been revealed in the horrific deaths of a quaint family living just outside of a small town in Texas.
Statements revealed that Charlie James Wilkinson, 19 and Charles Allen Waid, 20, entered the room of Terry and Penny Caffey in the early morning of March-. Erin Caffey, 16, had quieted the family dog and joined Bobbi Gale Johnson, 18, in the car which was parked out on the road. Wilkenson opened fire on the two with a 22 caliber pistol, but could not kill them, so he handed the gun to Waid who also fired on them. The boys came in the room and Wilkenson sent them back to their beds. Waid followed and shot Matthew. Both men took turns stabbing Tyler with a sword. They had also used the sword on Penny and Matthew. The men then looted the house for jewelry and set it on fire. Terry Caffey who was shot 5 times escaped through the bathroom window and left a bloody wake as he dragged himself over 300 yards for help.
Erin was found sleeping, along with Wilkenson, in Waid's trailer. Law enforcement found two swords, a pistol and a condom. Wilkenson reported that the two had sex and then went to sleep after the grisly attack on Erin's family.
By the time police reached the home it had been mostly burned down along with the family van. Penny, Matthew and Tyler were found dead in the ashes. The bodies of Penny, Matthew and Tyler were sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for autopsies. The preliminary autopsy revealed some horrifying results, that the three had inhaled smoke before their deaths. Investigators now believe that after being shot multiple times and stabbed with a sword, Penny, Matthew and Tyler lay either conscious or unconscious, unable to escape the fire that finally claimed their lives.
Several church members and friends have reported that the Caffey's had told Erin that the two must break up just the night before. They also took her cell phone. Other church members had talked to the girl telling her they feared that Wilkenson would pressure her into sex. They never imagined he would take the lives of her family while she sat in the car listening to their screams.
