Kwame Kilpatrick already has the dubious distinction of being the first criminal mayor in US history. Now, he may get the "violent" label after assaulting a police officer, making his profile even more dubious.
According to a report from CBS News, Kwame Kilpatrick has now been charged with assaulting a police officer moments after a judge ruled that the disgraced Detroit mayor could be released on $50000 bond. These charges were pressed by Michigan's attorney general who accused Kilpatrick of pushing an investigator who was trying to serve a subpoena on one of Kilpatrick's friends. Kilpatrick is already in hot water for going to Windso, Ontario, Canada to discuss the sale of a tunnel connecting Detroit with Canada. The court order required Kilpatrick to notify the court if he wanted to leave the US. The offense of assaulting and obstructing a police officer is punishable by up to 2 years imprisonment which Kilpatrick had hoped to avoid by paying the fine. He also won't be allowed to travel. Kilpatrick must also wear an electronic tether. According to Michigan attorney general Mike Cox at a news conference, “In my almost 20 years, first as a prosecutor and now as attorney general… I cannot recall ever seeing let alone hearing of a police officer trying to serve a subpoena being assaulted”. This is very true. Kilpatrick's behavior is more like a gang member than a mayor.
