Dunkin Donuts is trying to refresh its image by trying to eliminate a lot of trans fat from its foods. They want to use an alternative cooking oil in its foods - including the donuts. The Canton, Mass - based chain says its menu will be zero grams of trans fat by October 15 across it's 5,400 US restaurants in 34 states.
There were about 400 locations nationwide that have made the switch to a new blend of palm, soybean and cottonseed oils.
Baskin Robbins, the ice cream chain of Dunkin Donuts, is also trimming trans fat. That should be done by January 1.
Dunkin Donuts foods may not be completely trans fat free, but it will be reduced to below half a gram per serving.
For those of you who don't know, trans fats main source is partially hydrogenated oils, formed when hydrogen is added to liquid vegetable oils to harden them. Evidence suggests that artificial trans fats boost “bad” cholesterol and lower “good” cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
I think that this is a great step for Dunkin Donuts to take. I like eating donuts from Dunkin Donuts so I am glad that the trans fat will be reduced. I hope that it won't affect the taste of the food at Dunkin Donuts. If this works out, hopefully all of the chains will do this worldwide.
