Proposed Florida Bill May Ban Certain Dog Breeds: For or Against?

State Representative Perry Thurston is pushing a bill that would allow cities in Florida to prohibit residents from owning certain breeds of dogs, possibly punishing well-behaved dogs owned by responsible people. PETA supports this bill, while The Humane Society of the United States and The Florida Animal Control Association think the bill is a poor proposal.

If this bill should pass, each city in Florida will have the ability to ban any breed of dog that they deem a threat to society. Some of the breeds specifically targeted in this debate are terrier mix breeds, pit bulls, shepherd mixes, lab mixes, and chow mixes, although the actual breeds that may be banned will be determined by each city.

Although some of these breeds may have been classified previously as dangerous by some, Lee County Animal Services has many different dogs in their custody for biting someone, including a Chihuahua.

Donald Cohen, of the Gulf Coast Humane Society states, "Condemn the deed not the breed. It worries me a great deal because there are good pet owners out there that love their animals and banning a pet just because it's a particular breed is wrong."

"I don't think there's any such thing as a dangerous breed. I think there's something called a dangerous owner," said Cohen.

PETA believes this bill will keep negligent dog owners from intentionally raising particular breeds to be vicious.

The Humane Society strongly believes that if the bill passes, a lot of pets would be pointlessly euthanized.

Personally, I believe that this bill could become a serious problem for residents of Florida, like myself. More should be done to punish the individuals who train dogs to be vicious. More should be done to stop dog fighting rings. Punish the people, not the animals.

A dog's breed is only the half of it, a dog's personality and behavior are a direct reflection of their owner.

I think the bill is a GREAT IDEA! People would be so much safer if these dangerous breeds no longer existed!

and yet, some dogs are known to be killers. Throught generation that what they were bread for. If you take the number of kids killed by dogs you will find that there are 4 or 5 breeds that are responsible for most of these deaths. To say that all dogs have the same level of aggression and its the owner is responsible is to ignore what we know about dogs.

It makes me sick when people have no idea what they are talking about. If most people would just read a book. Pit bulls are not human aggressive. Any dog that doesn't have human or dog contact will be dangerous. A lot of these pit bull owners shut there dogs off from the out side world. You have people who can make a puddle just as aggressive as a pit bull. For all you pit hatters in the world, this is a free lesson. To make a mean dog, keep him in a room with no sunlight. Make sure your dog only comes in contact with you and nobody eles. And don't let anydogs near it. This is the real problem. I just told you how to make a mean aggressive dog. This will work with any breed. So now we should kill all dogs, I've known people who fight dogs and that's how they do it. The law should make dogfighting into attempted murder, that would change a lot to peoples actions. If you ban these breeds, there will be another breed that will be mad aggressive for fighting.

If you watch animal precent you would see that it's the owners not the dogs. I've had pit bulls and my son would pull its ears and pull its tale. My dog never snapped or got aggressive towards me or my son. We have a lot of people who are just going on what they here people say or whats on the news. The only thing you can say about a breed which could be true. Is that breed is dog aggressive or a really natural or over protective breed. But no dog is aggressive towards humans. And if these people knew anything, they would know that the reason pit bulls don't make good property guard dogs is because they are to human friendly. So like mercury said you guys need to pick up a book and read up on breeds. And to let you guys know a little something. Some of these so called dog breeder, sometimes breed brothers with sisters. That gives you a dog with mental problems if you didn't know that. Lets leave these dogs alone. That like saying blacks and hispanics should be banned. Just like all black and hispanic people aren't bad, the same goes for dogs

I was just reading what some one said about this new possible law being passed. This stupid person said that it would stop people from making a breed aggressive. I could make a huskie just as mean and aggressive as a pit or rott. Also people are saying they would feel saver with no pit bulls in there neighbor hood. For you stupid people in the world pitts are not human aggressive. There are only two ways a pitt would be aggressive toward a huma. One if it\'s trained to be. Or if the dog isn\'t around people at all only it\'s owner. If I had a huskie from when it was a pupie. And I don\'t socialize with people or dogs. You couldn\'t go near it either. You guys need to take your heads out of your asses. And know what your talking about before you open your mouth about dogs

I would like to thank everyone for their comments!

Personally, I grew up with Akitas and now, as an adult, have added an Akita to my family. Akitas are also targeted on this list of "dangerous breeds" but our Akitas were NEVER aggressive. Our cat had kittens a few times over the years, and Buchi, our Akita, would let the kittens try to nurse from her. Also, we have a lot of children over to visit and they were rough on her, and she loved every minute of it.

Its all in how your pet is raised. As puppies, we would mess with our Akitas while they were eatting, sticking our hands in the food bowl and all over their faces. All of our Akitas would allow ANYONE to touch their food bowl while they were eatting, or take it away completely. We trained them to allow us to take away a steak while they were eatting it if we wanted to.

Its unfair to classify a specific breed as dangerous because a few idoits didn't take the time to raise their dogs properly or raised them to be aggressive.

I think breed-specific laws like this are stupid. Its all in how you raise the dog, no breed is naturally agressive. Think about it, say we did ban pit bulls here. Well, your're dog fighters are still going to want to fight and your thugs are still going to want a mean looking tough dog to train to be vicious. There's no more pit bulls, so they go out and start buying Rottweilers. When we ban Rottweilers they start using German Shepherds, when we ban German Shepherds they start using Bullmastiffs. There's no end, if we ban pit bulls bad owners will just go find another breed to fill in the pit bulls place. Furthermore, dog fighters are hardly law abiding citizens to begin with....we can't stop them from fighting dogs now even though its illegal, do you seriously think we'll be able to stop them from buying and breeding pit bulls. Some of you may be scared to death of pit bulls and think they're man-eaters (which they are not), but if we ban the pit bull now, it may be your dog that is banned tomorrow. Any dog can be tought to be mean, no matter how small they are.

I myself own two Siberian Huskies. Neither of them are mean, yet Sibieran Huskies are #4 on the bite list of the United States right behind the pit bull, rottweiler and german shepherd. I would hate it if breed bans started here. If Siberians got banned I would either have to move or surrender my dogs to be euthanized, even though my dogs have never done anything wrong.

We need to crack down on dog fighting, enforce leash laws and promote responsible dog ownership. That is the only solution to this problem, not banning certain breeds. If need be ban the idiots training their dogs to be mean from ever owning another dog, but don't ban the dog.

I KNOW ONE THING ABOUT PIT BULL DOGS , THEY ARE BREED TO FIGHT, NO WAY CAN YOU TAKE OUT OF THEM, THEY ARE BREED TO FIGHT TO THE END, NO MATTER HOW IT RAISED , AT SOME POINT DURING ITS LIFE, IT WILL FIGHT ,LIVING IN THE COUNTRY , I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THEM, WITH IN A CITY LIMITS THEY SHOULD BE OUTLAWED , PEOPLE WHO STATE ITS HOW YOU TREAT IT AS A PUPPY , DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. SO I GUESS I CAN TAKE A BABY SNAKE, SHOW IT ALOT OF LOVE AND IT WILL NOT BITE, I CAN SHOW A BABY BIRD ALOT OF LOVE, BECOMES AN ADULT AND PLACED OUT SIDE IT WILL NOT FLY AWAY , COME ON (GET FOR REAL )

Breed bans don't work. Just because a dog is bred to fight dogs, doesn't mean they WILL ALWAYS fight other dogs. You should really know more than 'one thing about pit bull dogs' before you condemn innocent pets to be slaughtered. Do some research. Common people. Don't think that your slightly stocky lab, or your sweet terrier mix will be safe. One woman almost had her PUREBRED lab taken away because it resembled a pit bull. The only reason it wasn't confiscated on the spot is because she had papers for the dog. Breed bans aren't the answer. There should be 'bad owner' bans instead.
