What is SO wrong with these Arabic and Persian men (Iranians and Afghanis are not Arabs)? The same thing that is wrong with the Christian right wingers of our own U.S.A. They have perverted the original intent of the prophets whose teachings they mean to follow. Let's look back at the historical facts. Muhammad's first wife, Kadijah, was a wealthy widower involved in the caravan trade, almost twice his age, who proposed marriage to him (not the other way around). Does this sound like a totally male dominated society? Even in pre-Islamic Arabia women were able to hold power in the areas of marriage, property ownership, wealth, and economic power. When establishing Islam, one of Muhammad's great concerns was the fair treatment of women. Furthermore, there is nothing in the Koran that states a woman must wear the chador or burka. The religion, like most, has become so far removed from its original intent that it is no longer the same religion. I say this about Christians and Muslims: If Jesus or Muhammad were to return today with their original teachings, their own followers would be the first to crucify them.

Women in those parts of the world are subject to daily torments just because they are women. The question is "why women?" It is true that even in the recent past women have had to fight to be admitted in the "club" the highly masculine elite of all societies or at least 99% of all of them worldwide. Women were still imprisoned in England in the 1920s when arrested for the "crime" of being suffragette. Yet women had already conquered a certain space for themselves in the predominantly male society. The brutal and barbaric facts reported from Afghanistan tell us that even an embryonic space of specifically woman-oriented social fabric simply does not exist in these areas. Mysogynic hatred is the actual state religion of the islamic societies. I know in Egypt they do not have to wear the burqa yet large number of young girls and women are privately mutilated every year at home by the "nurses" of the Koran. What's SO wrong with these arabic men?
