An Honest Point of View

The elections are drawing nearer and the candidates continue to take pot shots at each other at every turn. I guess it’s a lot easier, than trying to come up with ways to dig us out of the hole we’ve been in for the past eight years. The way I see it, no matter who’s running the country in 2009 we’re still screwed. We just bailed out Wall Street so, who’s next on the taxpayer charity trust fund list?

It amazes me, we can give away billions of dollars in taxpayer funds to foreign nations and financial mismanagement on Wall Street but, we become very stingy when it comes to giving the average John and Jane Doe here any of those funds. I’m not saying don’t help those in need but remember, charity starts at home. We have citizens here that have been devastated by hurricanes and they have to go through tons of political red tape for what amounts to pennies. Greedy insurance companies that are more than happy to collect their monthly premiums then use every loophole in the book in order not to pay their policy holders.

It happened during Katrina, Rita and now Ike. Most people have lost everything that they own and are faced with the grim task of starting over from nothing. Why can’t the government give them money to rebuild their homes and lives? Mostly because, there’s nothing in it for the political fat cats and lobbyists. We just keep working, paying taxes and watching the government squander it. Whoever, the next President is should think about putting the people, who elected them first for a change.

Nine Things I Learned From Paul Newman

Paul Newman, who died on September 26, was one of the biggest movie stars of all time, and for a teenage boy like me in the 1960s, there was nobody cooler than the star of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, and “Cool Hand Luke”. Sardonic, hip, cocky, and handsome, he personified everything that I aspired to.

I’m older now, and instead of casting aside my boyhood heroes as so many of us do, I actually admire Paul Newman even more. Not for those roles he played so many years ago, but for the way he lived his life. It turns out that the man Paul Newman was a lot more interesting than the movie star, for the lessons he taught us all in how to live a fulfilling life.
Here are the nine lessons I learned from Paul Newman’s life.

1. Work hard. In his 56 year career Paul Newman acted in 81 movies or TV episodes, directed six movies, produced ten more movies, and was even credited as a writer on one film. He also did voiceovers, soundtracks for animated movies, and innumerable political advertisements. The man never stopped working, even into his 80s.
2. Play hard. Newman had an impish sense of humor, often playing practical jokes on his friends and co-workers. He owned a Volkswagen Beetle that had a souped up engine in it, and he loved to pull up next to teenagers at traffic lights and then beat them off the line when the light turned green. The look of shock on their faces was priceless, he said.
3. Look for new challenges. Newman took up auto racing when he was in his mid-40s, at the height of his movie career. How many people do you know who would scale back a successful career to take up something as difficult and dangerous as car racing? But Paul Newman knew that the best life is one that is lived by meeting new challenges and overcoming them, not sitting back on your laurels.
4. Nobody is immune from tragedy. Newman once said that any successful person who doesn’t admit that luck played a part in their success is lying. He knew he was a lucky man, and he was grateful for it. Even with all his luck and success, however, he had tragedy. His son Scott died of an accidental drug overdose in 1978, which left him grief-stricken. Somehow, he pulled himself together and went back to work, and he was nominated for five Academy Awards and one Emmy for movies and TV work he did in the ensuing years. He also established the Scott Newman Foundation for education about drug abuse.
5. Give something back. Not content to be a movie star and race car driver, Newman started a company, Newman’s Own, to raise money for charity. The food products he sold raised $200 million for charities, including his own Hole-In-The-Wall camps for sick children.
6. Don’t get too full of yourself. Paul Newman was a very humble person, who often downplayed his acting. He said in recent years that he couldn’t stand to watch his performances from before 1990, because they were too mechanical. People who met him always talked about his down-to-earth qualities.
7. Do what you love, and the money will follow. His father ran a sporting goods store, and Paul was expected to follow in his footsteps. However, he had a love of acting, and after his father died he sold the store and used the money to finance his acting studies. He was broke and poor for awhile in New York, but eventually he got his break. It’s a clear example that by following your heart you can also achieve financial success.
8. Don’t worry about conventional wisdom. Most movie actors live in California, so they can be near Hollywood, the center of their industry. The conventional wisdom says you have to be close to Hollywood because that’s where the producers, agents, and the studios are. Paul Newman didn’t do that – he had a permanent home in Connecticut, far away from the Hollywood scene. He liked the East Coast and simply decided that was where he wanted to raise his family, conventional wisdom be damned. And it worked for him.
9. Commitment means something. Paul Newman was married for 50 years to the same woman, Joanne Woodward. There was a time in the 1960s and 70s when he was the biggest movie star on the planet. How many stars of that stature today can stay married for 50 months, let alone 50 years? There are countless temptations, and it’s the rare star who doesn’t succumb to them. For Paul Newman, though, that was never an option. He stayed married, raised his children, enjoyed a successful career, and gave back to the world.

Those aren’t bad lessons for any of us.

The Real Story About the Alleged Death of Miley Cyrus

Rumors recently went wild over the internet about the alleged death of Miley Cyrus, the famous Miley Stewart character in the TV series Hannah Montana. The rumors started to spread like wildfire over the blogosphere, social networking sites and email, claiming that Ms. Cyrus died in a car accident on Sept. 5, 2008 while on the way to a TV taping.

The reported untimely death of the young, female TV star first floated on Wikipedia and Digg. Other forums portray a different story. In Yahoo Answers, a user asked, "Is it true that someone shot Miley Cyrus?" (Quote rephrased). Other users have various opinions. The question remains, is she really dead?

Though this piece of news has been popular among blogs, forums, and sites visited by the general public, there is no sound of it among legitimate news networks and from showbiz sources. This led many people to believe that it is just another internet hoax generated by users with crazy imaginations. As of this writing, some blog posts have begun to counter the previous rumors, claiming that Miley Cyrus is NOT dead.

No statement has been issued by Miley Cyrus or the Disney Channel. It seems like "Hannah Montana" will go on as usual. If the rumors are false as it appears to be, it will simply turn out as one of the most talked about online hoaxes this year, much worse a possible publicity stunt.

Bridget Nisivoccia and Peter Cook: Do Professional Relationships Turn Personal?

One after another a new woman reportedly be named in the divorce hearings between supermodel Christie Brinkely and Peter Cook after there 10 year old marriage ended in 2006. That will fought the battle in court for taking custody of the couple's two kids. According to a New York Daily News , testimony this week will link Cook to interior designer Bridget Nisivoccia a pretty, blond interior designer who told the New York Daily News that Cook hired her for designing Cook's home in Sag Harbor, L.I. She might be testified this weeks trial The 36-year-old Nisivoccia joins a growing list of women in Cook's life after Diana Bianchi who worked for cook and Fitness model Carri Lyn Ciamarra, a married Westchester mom has been called to testify.

Nisivoccia said they share a professional relationship. But the question is where to draw the line? And this is not a real entity so this is not easy and even harder in case if one is celebrity. During my student life in Grad School I saw a friend of mine was being romantically and sexually involved with her young married lecturer. It made too much hassle into his married life and ultimately he terminated the relationship. The girl was depressed for some months but later she recovered and happily married with somebody.

Five Tips to avoid this

Both parties have to understand that there are significant risks in any sexual or romantic relationship between individuals in professional relationship.

Think of others who will be negatively affected by this.

The professional member should not be involved in decision-making or other processes that could advantage or disadvantage the other person.

Certain forms of communicating, such as language used, eye contact, types of touching should be avoided.

They can take help of a Psychologist.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell Has Air Rage

When it comes to Naomi Campbell , a.k.a Supermodel Bad Girl, it's misery loves company. She was charge with assulting police officers on the British Airways and sentence to $200 of community service. The reason she gave for acting out was because someone on the Airlines called her a " Gollywog Supermodel". That's just no excuse what so ever. It's bad enough acting out when someone insults you to your face and you let them have it, just don't spread that ugly hurt feeling to the ones that are there to intervene (the police officers). That just isn't right !

Now lets say, that the police officers continue to spread there ugly hurt feeling that they just encountered to another innocent bystander and so on. That wouldn't be fair. Hurt can spread like a virus. If you really think about maybe that person was having a bad and gave her a dose of ugly hurt feelings. My suggestion to her is learn how to deal with the problem by ignoring that person. If she feeds into what they are saying about he,r then she is allowing them to control her feelings and making her look bad to the media. Then people like myself will continue to see her as a"Supermodel Bad Girl". If she can't retain her feelings inside, maybe she should get checked out to see if she has Bipolor.

On a good note, I am glad that she pled guilty because she knew what she did was wrong and that she went too far. That's the first step in getting help.

DC Comics Forces Charitable Ebayer to Pull Auctions

A team of lawyers for the WB has constrained the use of Superman related works created by a team of comic artists listed through eBay's charitable donation channel. They forcibly had the company to pull the items saying that it was a violation of trademark and copyrights. Thomas Denton, a Superman fan site owner, says that he asked for the help of the artists' creative abilities to place the comic related lists up to donate the proceeds to Candlelighters.

This Childhood Cancer Foundation Office was founded in 1970 by parents of adolescents with cancer. Candlelighters provides cancer education for children and families, supports research of the disease, and is an advocate for the fight against cancer. In the present, the organization has over 50,000 members of their national office and more than 100,000 members across the United States. Mr. Denton said that he had decided to have the comic artists' creations made and posted on the auction network, because he was thankful for what the center had done to help his nephew fight his battle with cancer. However, his hopes were dashed when WB, DC's parent company, found out about the items up for bid and said that Superman was their property which wasn't allowed for helping with any charities.

Denton says that due to this sour experience, he will close down his fan site dedicated to the man of steel. He will still be required to pay the fees for the auctions pulled, and DC in what can only be seen as a very poor attempt at showing slight empathy, allowed one of the items to continue for bidding.

Critics of Thomas Denton's efforts argue that he should have gone through procedure and obtained permission before having the creations listed on eBay. They also say that his low feedback score could have indicated a scam artist and posed a possible threat to the name of Superman and other WB owned characters. The auctions for Candlelighters, they claim, may have also been a problem if they weren't listed under eBay's "Mission Fish" charitable donations section.

Those who looked into the auctions further say they found no items listed for Candlelighters including Denton's. Some feel that the failure to obtain a positive feedback score before posting, that correct start up wasn't used by contacting the owners of Superman and friends prior, and talking to the cancer organization for teamwork led to an obvious strike down. Others may not believe that the man is a scam artist, but say that they support DC's right to flex their ownership muscle when dealing with this type of situation.

The overwhelming response in the court of public opinion is that it is sad if Denton's efforts were honest and that maybe the WB and DC should team up with the charitable auctioneer by either approving the creations or donating some for the purpose of fund raising for Candlelighters. The auctions, obviously could have easily been reworked by the WB lawyers so that contracts were made with Candllighters and Mr. Denton to post up legally authorized auctions of Superman and the other characters. As he has blogged, his aren't the only listings featuring the hero of Metropolis or any other in DC comics. Either way, it is a very sad situation for both sides, especially those that may have been helped by any money obtained from the listings.

The Hoff

A few months ago a video of David Hasslehoff surfaced on the internet and the video show him drunk and eating a burger off of the floor. The video was taken by his own daughter and than showed up on the internet days later.

I think it was wrong of his daughter to video tape him and then to be put it on public display. It was not right because he was in the privacy of his own home. Everyone makes mistakes and he has even admitted that he made a mistake and it was not like he was drinking in public and causing a scene.

He was at his house and on his floor and he was not doing anything wrong, he was just drunk. Yes it was a little weird that he was eating a burger off of the ground and yes you could not really understand what he was saying but the fact of the matter is he is old enough to drink, he was not in public and he was not endangering anyone else. I also thought it was funny when people though he should lose custody/visitation rights over this incident but he didn't and he shouldn't either because he has done nothing wrong.

The Chris Benoit Murder/Suicide Case

It has been reported that over the course of the weekend of June 22, 2007 through June 25, 2007, professional wrestler Chris Benoit murdered his wife Nancy Benoit and their 7 year old son Daniel, before finally hanging himself.

At first report, it was thought that Benoit had suffered from what is known among athletes as "Roid Rage", making him snap and kill them, then himself. "Roid Rage" has never been proven to be an actual condition, nor has it ever been linked with the type of case that we're looking at with Chris Benoit. After assessing the time of death for Nancy, Daniel and Chris, it was determined that it was not a case of a rage. According to many reports, Nancy died Friday, Daniel died Saturday and Chris died on Sunday, none of whom were found until late Monday afternoon.

It was also reported that coworkers received text messages from Chris and Nancy's cell phones that were out of character for Chris. According to one report, Chris had messaged his co-workers with his address and instructions on how to get inside the house, as well as the location of the family dogs. Chris had been scheduled to appear at several events that weekend and when contacted about them, he gave excuses of missing flights, family emergency and then just not answering calls, prompting World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to send Fayetteville, Georgia police to check on the welfare of Benoit.

The bodies were discovered just hours before a live event for the WWE in Texas, prompting them to cancel their live three hour event and pay tribute to Benoit and his family, long before the gruesome details came to light. WWE chairman, Vince McMahon, nixed a story-line that had started a week prior, involving the apparent explosion of a limousine that he was in. In the story-line, McMahon was to have been dead, leaving the wrestlers and his family to figure out who had killed him. Out of respect for the deaths of Benoit and his family, McMahon came forward and let the audience know that he was, indeed, alive and well, but extended his sympathies on behalf of WWE to Benoit's family.

With all of this controversy over Benoit's possible "Roid Rage" there has been a lot of speculation, despite WWE's statement that Benoit's last drug test in April had come back clean. It has led to the investigation and subsequent arrest of Benoit's physician as well for several charges relating to drugs and drug abuse.

Where does this leave professional wrestling? It has left them under a large, hot spotlight of questions and speculation. It doesn't seem to have deterred the fans at all. The professional wrestling industry has survived many controversies over the years and has still grown to the degree that it is today. Despite drug overdoses, in ring accidents, life threatening injuries to many of the sports top competitors, professional wrestling continues to grow in popularity.

Does professional wrestling need to clean up it's act and find a way to continue on without putting so many people at risk of injury and death? Yes it does, but in the case of Chris Benoit, there really wasn't a whole lot that could be done. He had problems that went beyond the scope of wrestling, much so that we may never know what really pushed him over the edge that weekend.
