America's Suicide: Election 08

With the many growing problems of our world, of our country, America looks for a new leader. The timing couldn't be better but the actions couldn't be worse. In South Carolina John Edwards, Barack Obama, and Hilary Clinton spoke about the big issues of today in the Democratic Debate. It wasn't really much of a debate; it was more like an episode of Jerry Springer. Candidates took turns attacking each other's character and background. Interrupting and insulting one another like children and the audience just applauded.

Issues were addressed and answers were given but all in a shameful fashion. Most of the debate was spent with Edwards looking on as Obama and Clinton spat on each other's views and credentials. It was appalling to hear the crowd applaud as the two went back and forth about statements made and implied meanings. Clinton attacked Obama's uncertainty on issues and who he represented before becoming senator while he attacked her campaign tactics and what she did before her political career. Doesn't self-respect as well as respect for others matter anymore? The snide remarks and sarcastic comments added nothing but disgust to the debate. Since then Edwards has dropped out of the race and things have only gotten worse with the only two fighters left threatening to go deeper into each other's pasts. The media feeds the feud between Clinton and Obama saying things are getting “hotter”. The truth is that there is nothing hot about making an opponent look like a fool. There should not be anything interesting about seeing who can come up with the dirtiest trick, or the cleanest lie. We should not fire people up to think of the coldest way to get rid of competition. It should be a peaceful race that works to better the human race. Today it seems that politicians would rather power over peace and will get it however possible. The American people know that, and somehow find themselves okay with it anyway.

It's amazing that politics goes through so much to show people the true nature of a candidate and they still find a way to complain. Voters find themselves unhappy with the actions their presidents' take or didn't take, the way money is handled, the way anything is done. Yet, they don't pay attention to the hints of trouble. They ignore the fact that politicians would rather sling mud than serve solution. They accept the dangerous flaws of a candidate's plans because they share a party or pigment. They welcome what should be questioned because they like the idea of a change in sex. Maybe they don't realize that just because a candidate will make history does not mean they will make things heavenly. Could it be that society does not view Clinton's lack of charisma as a problem? Could society be okay with Obama dodging topics as long as he slides in comments about creating revenue? Could it be true that the country is struggling not because of external forces but internal failure? Do we allow our ballot to act as suicide stabbing ourselves in the back by electing someone who has stabbed another? Before a blade is drawn or a finger is pointed we must stop and observe, because this election may not only be the most historical but also the most dangerous.
