While the majority of the population accepts this account with no questions asked, there is a rapidly growing group of people who believe in the various conspiracy theories for the attacks. This paper examines the holes of the aforementioned mainstream accounts that ultimately fuel these conspiracy theories.

September 11, 2001 was simply a day of confusion, chaos, and terror all in one sick package. The initial reaction for every American citizen upon first hearing the news was the same: complete and utter shock. The image of the plane crashing and exploding on impact upon touching one Twin Tower building was shown on television in repetition like a video tape stuck on rewind.

After nine minutes of "recovery" suddenly another plane was seen crashing on the other Twin Tower building. The aftershock of the attacks not only touched the lives of the Americans, but also of those across the world. Simply put, September 11 was the one of the biggest tragedies in the modern era. Life as the American public knew it was changed that day. Normal everyday activities were abandoned. Several schools were closed, every television channel was shut down, and even large sporting events were cancelled across the country. After a few moments the country regained composure. After taking it all in, people began to question how and why these attacks happened. This is where news comes in. Every person clinged to the news reports on television and in the newspaper. By now the American public knows the mainstream accounts of the attacks almost by heart. But is there more to the story? Are there any missing pieces of information out there?

This literature reviews the role of the conspiracy theories by responding to the following questions:

How many people believe these conspiracy theories?

What are some of the holes of the mainstream accounts?

Did explosives planted by the government deliberately demolish World Trade Centers?

Did the CIA have inside information of the attacks beforehand?

Was NORAD responsible for the suicide planes?

Why would the government want the attacks to happen?

According to the numerous polls concerning the September 11 attacks, there are a contingency of people in the United State that do not believe the mainstream accounts of the media thus generating the conspiracy theories blaming the attacks on the United States Government.
